For centuries whisky (derived form
the Gaelic unigebeatha, meaning ' water of life' ) has been distilled
throughout Scotland; the earliest know explicit reference to this spirit
dates back to 1494. Today there are in excess of 100 distilleries manufacturing
hundreds of different whiskies from the Scottish Lowlands and Borders
through the Highlands to the Orkney Islands; each distillery generating
a unique spirit instilled with a characteristic particular to its origin. Currently, the generators used in
the laboratory are Hydrogen, Nitrogen
and Air. Installation of the gas generators
has improved safety, permitted in-house control of gas quality and diminished
