For centuries whisky (derived form the Gaelic unigebeatha, meaning ' water of life' ) has been distilled throughout Scotland; the earliest know explicit reference to this spirit dates back to 1494. Today there are in excess of 100 distilleries manufacturing hundreds of different whiskies from the Scottish Lowlands and Borders through the Highlands to the Orkney Islands; each distillery generating a unique spirit instilled with a characteristic particular to its origin.

Of the 100 or so distilleries William Grant & Sons Ltd remains one of the few independent companies (owned by the 5 th generation of descendants from William Grant) to retain and use all of the traditional skills necessary for the manufacturing of whisky.

A fundamental to guaranteeing spirit of the highest quality is ensuring that the spirit contains the precise levels of certain key congeners. Such congeners include butanol and iso-amyl, which contribute to the spirit' s unique profile or chemical finger print, ultimately leading to a whisky of individual definition and exacting quality.

William Grant & Sons Ltd replies upon Gas Chromatographic analysis of all new make spirit (subsequent of distillation) and mature spirit (subject to maturation in oak casks) equating to in excess of 1000 samples per month to provide this data.

This 24 hours per day ­ 365 days per year operation demands accurate and reliable instrumentation and instrument support. In their relentless pursuit for improved quality, efficiency, innovation and safety, William Grant & Sons Ltd have installed two PEAK Scientific Instruments gas generators to furnish the GC instrumentation with the requisite gases.

Currently, the generators used in the laboratory are Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Air. Installation of the gas generators has improved safety, permitted in-house control of gas quality and diminished costs by thousands of pounds per annum.
